- Providence was founded in 1636 by Roger Williams after he was forced to flee the Massachusetts Bay Colony because of religious persecution.
- Providence was actually one of five state capitals until 1854, when they were cut down to two, Newport and Providence. Providence became the sole capital in 1901.
- The first diner is credited to Walter Scott, who sold food from his horse drawn wagon outside the offices of the Providence Journal in 1872.
