- East Providence was once part of Rehoboth and then Seekonk, Massachusetts, East Providence became an independent Rhode Island town in 1862.
- Unlike other early Rhode Island towns, the first settlers who stayed
(Samuel Newman and his followers) established a huge town common in what
is now Rumford and gave it a distinctive name: "The Ring of the Green."
- East Providence lies at a crossroad on water and on land. This made East Providence an important hub for boat and train transport.

- Â The Crescent Park Carousel was built in 1895 by Charles I.D. Loof, it is nationally recognized as a masterpiece of wood sculpture. It is one of the largest of Looff's works. It operates in the spring, summer and fall each year.Â
- Sabin Point Park: This 4.0-acre park juts out into beautiful Narraganset Bay. The park
includes a playground, basketball courts, pavilion, fishing pier, picnic
tables and new concrete walking paths.
