New York City Mayor, Michael Bloomberg is on a green streak, and part of his effort involves getting an electric cab system off the ground by 2012. Don't think he can do it? Think again!

With the help of Nissan, the Big Apple will introduce six LEAF EVs to its streets early next spring, as part of a year-long pilot program. The goal is to see just how well the LEAF EVs fares life on the city's streets, and the hectic NYC-cab lifestyle. Of course, the hope is to add more LEAF EV cabs to the fleet after the pilot is finished. But, that decision ultimately depends on response from participating drivers and perhaps more importantly, paying passengers.

The benefits of using the Nissan LEAF as a cab in NYC are obvious. LEAF EVs have absolutely no need for petrol. They produce zero-emissions. And given their limited ranges, they're perfect for urban commutes. The so-called kinks, Nissan and NYC still need to iron out are what types of chargers to use, as well as potential restrictions in terms of distance or duty.
